Day 1

Arrival in Paro & Scenic Transfer to Thimphu

  • Morning/Afternoon: Your flight into Paro offers stunning Himalayan views. After immigration, meet your guide and driver.
  • Scenic Drive: Enjoy the 1.5-hour drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital.
  • Evening:
    • Check into your hotel.
    • Visit the magnificent Tashichho Dzong (seat of government), especially beautiful in the evening light.
    • Take a leisurely stroll through Thimphu’s main area to acclimatize.
  • Overnight: Thimphu

Day 2

Immersion in the Capital's Culture

  • Morning:
    • Buddha Dordenma: Visit the gigantic 169-foot bronze Buddha statue overlooking the valley.
    • National Memorial Chorten: Experience everyday Bhutanese spirituality at this iconic stupa.
  • Afternoon:
    • Motithang Takin Preserve: See Bhutan’s unique national animal.
    • Institute for Zorig Chusum: Watch students master the 13 traditional arts.
    • Optional: National Textile Museum or Simply enjoy the vibe of the city.

Day 3

Over the Dochu La Pass to Punakha

  • Morning: Drive to Dochu La Pass (3,100m). Stop to admire the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens and the panoramic Himalayan views.
  • Afternoon: Descend into the warm, fertile Punakha Valley.
    • Punakha Dzong: Visit Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
    • Punakha Suspension Bridge: Walk one of Bhutan’s longest bridges for fantastic photos.
  • Late Afternoon: Hike through rice fields to the Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility).
  • Overnight: Punakha

Day 4

To the Serene Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey)

  • Morning: Enjoy a relaxed morning. Consider a short hike to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten for stunning valley views.
  • Afternoon: Drive approximately 3 hours to the Phobjikha Valley, a wide, glacial valley and protected conservation area.
    • This is the winter home (Oct-Feb) of the endangered Black-Necked Cranes.
  • Late Afternoon:
    • Visit the Gangtey Goemba monastery overlooking the valley.
    • Walk the famous Gangtey Nature Trail (approx. 1.5 hrs), a gentle downhill hike through pine forests and meadows.
  • Overnight: Phobjikha Valley

Day 5

The Scenic Journey to Bumthang

  • Full Day: This is a long but incredibly scenic drive (approx. 6-7 hours) through the heart of Bhutan. The journey itself is an adventure, crossing several high passes.
  • Key Stops En Route:
    • Pele La Pass (3,420m): A traditional boundary between East and West, often adorned with prayer flags.
    • Trongsa: Visit the awe-inspiring Trongsa Dzong, the largest dzong in Bhutan, which seems to spill down the mountainside. You will also see the Ta Dzong (watchtower) museum dedicated to the Wangchuck dynasty.
    • Yotong La Pass (3,425m): Another high pass offering beautiful views.
  • Evening: Arrive in the Bumthang Valley, the cultural and spiritual heartland of Bhutan. Check into your hotel and relax after the journey.
  • Overnight: Bumthang

Day 6

Exploring the Bumthang Valleys

  • Full Day: A day to explore the four valleys of Bumthang, rich with sacred sites.
    • Jakar Dzong: “The Fortress of the White Bird,” known for its immense size and beautiful location.
    • Jambay Lhakhang: One of Bhutan’s oldest temples, dating back to the 7th century.
    • Kurjey Lhakhang: A temple complex built around a cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated, with his body imprint embedded in the rock.
    • Tamshing Lhakhang: A monastery housing ancient Buddhist frescoes.
    • Local Swiss Farm: Sample their famous Bumthang cheese and apple brandy.
  • Overnight: Bumthang

Day 7

Fly from Bumthang to Paro

  • Morning: Transfer to the Bathpalathang Airport in Bumthang for your domestic flight to Paro. This short, scenic flight saves you a long drive and offers amazing aerial views of the Himalayas.
  • Afternoon: Upon arrival in Paro, you have free time to explore the town, visit a local farmhouse, or simply relax.
  • Highly Recommended: Book a traditional Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath to rejuvenate after your travels and prepare for the hike tomorrow.
  • Overnight: Paro

Day 8

The Iconic Hike to Tiger's Nest (Taktsang)

  • Full Day: The climax of your Bhutan journey.
    • Start early. The hike to Taktsang Monastery is moderately challenging (2-3 hours up, 1.5-2 hours down). Ponies are available for part of the way.
    • The monastery, clinging to a cliff 900m above the valley, is an awe-inspiring sight.
    • There is a cafeteria halfway up for lunch with a stunning view.
  • Late Afternoon: Descend and return to your hotel.
  • Farewell Dinner: Enjoy a traditional Bhutanese meal to celebrate your incredible journey across Bhutan.
  • Overnight: Paro

Day 9

Depart from Paro

  • Morning: Enjoy a final Bhutanese breakfast. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping.
  • Departure: Your guide and driver will escort you to Paro International Airport, bidding you a heartfelt “Tashi Delek.”
