Detailed Itenary

Day 1

Arrival in the Mystical Paro Valley

  • Morning/Afternoon: Your flight into Paro is one of the most spectacular in the world, offering thrilling views of the Himalayas. After completing immigration, you’ll be greeted by your guide and driver.
  • Afternoon (if time permits): Depending on your arrival time, you can visit the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong), housed in an ancient watchtower. It provides a wonderful overview of Bhutan’s history and culture, perfect for starting your journey.
  • Evening: Check into your hotel in Paro. Take a gentle stroll through the quaint Paro town to acclimatize and get your first taste of Bhutanese life.
  • Overnight: Paro

Day 2

Over the Chele La Pass to Secluded Haa Valley (2,740m)

  • Morning: After breakfast, embark on one of Bhutan’s most scenic drives. You will ascend to Chele La Pass (3,988m), the highest motorable pass in Bhutan. On a clear day, the panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges, including Mt. Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, are breathtaking.
  • Mid-Morning: Stop at the pass to admire the view, pray at the fluttering prayer flags, and perhaps take a short walk.
  • Afternoon: Descend into the secluded Haa Valley, one of Bhutan’s most picturesque and least visited districts. It was closed to tourists until 2002, retaining a very authentic feel.
    • Visit the Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple), two of the valley’s most important temples that date back to the 7th century.
    • Enjoy a walk through the serene valley floor, surrounded by pristine nature and traditional homes.
  • Overnight: Haa Valley

Day 3

Explore Haa and Return to Thimphu via Chele La

  • Morning: Enjoy the tranquil morning air in Haa. You can embark on a short and beautiful hike, such as the trail to the Three Brothers Hills (Meri Puensum) or simply explore a local village to see rural life.
  • Afternoon: Retrace your journey back over the magnificent Chele La Pass. You may spot different views and lighting on the return trip.
  • Late Afternoon: Descend from the pass towards Thimphu.
    • En route, you can stop to hike to the Drakarpo / Divine Madman Temple (short, easy hike) for a unique cultural experience.
  • Evening: Check into your hotel in Thimphu. The evening is free for you to explore the capital’s bustling central area.
  • Overnight: Thimphu

Day 4

Thimphu's Culture & Drive to Punakha

  • Morning: Explore the key sites of Thimphu:
    • Buddha Dordenma: The gigantic Buddha statue overlooking the valley.
    • National Memorial Chorten: Join locals in circling this iconic stupa.
    • Motithang Takin Preserve: See Bhutan’s unique national animal.
  • Afternoon: Begin your drive to Punakha via the Dochu La Pass (3,100m). Stop to admire the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens and the Himalayan vista.
  • Late Afternoon: Descend into the warm Punakha Valley and check into your hotel.
  • Overnight: Punakha

Day 5

Punakha's Fortress & Wangdue's Legacy

  • Full Day: A day to deeply explore the Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang valleys.
    • Punakha Dzong: Visit this breathtaking fortress at the confluence of two rivers. It is the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan and a photographer’s dream.
    • Suspension Bridge: Walk across the longest bridge in Bhutan for stunning views of the dzong.
    • Chimi Lhakhang: Take a pleasant hike through rice fields to the famous “Temple of Fertility.”
    • Wangdue Phodrang: Drive to the nearby town. While the historic Wangdue Phodrang Dzong tragically burned down in 2012, you can visit the new dzong built on a nearby hill and explore the local market, known for its bamboo work, stone carvings, and slate products.
  • Overnight: Punakha

Day 6

Scenic Return to Paro Valley

  • Morning: You have a couple of options before departing:
    • Option A (Active): Take a moderate 1-hour hike to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a beautiful temple offering spectacular valley views.
    • Option B (Relaxed): Enjoy a relaxed morning by the river or visit a local farmhouse for a glimpse into traditional Bhutanese life.
  • Afternoon: Begin the scenic drive back to Paro (approx. 4 hours). The journey back over the Dochu La is just as beautiful.
  • Evening: Upon arrival in Paro, you are free to relax. We highly recommend experiencing a traditional Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath at a farmhouse to soothe your muscles after the travels, preparing you for the Tiger’s Nest hike.
  • Overnight: Paro

Day 7

The Iconic Hike to Tiger's Nest (Taktsang)

  • Full Day: The climax of your Bhutan journey.
    • Start early. The hike to Taktsang Monastery is moderately challenging and takes about 2-3 hours up and 1.5-2 hours down. Ponies are available for part of the way.
    • The monastery, clinging to a cliff 900 meters above the valley, is an awe-inspiring sight and a deeply spiritual place.
    • There is a cafeteria halfway up where you can stop for lunch with an incredible view of the monastery.
  • Late Afternoon: Descend and return to your hotel with a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
  • Farewell Dinner: Enjoy a traditional Bhutanese meal with your guide and driver to celebrate your journey.
  • Overnight: Paro

Day 8

Depart from Paro

  • Morning: Enjoy a final Bhutanese breakfast. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping in Paro town.
  • Departure: Your guide and driver will escort you to Paro International Airport, bidding you a heartfelt “Tashi Delek” as you depart.

  • Rain Gear & Sun Protection: The weather can be unpredictable. A rain jacket, sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen are must-haves.
  • Daypack: For carrying water, layers, and your camera during daily excursions.

Respectful Attire: Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is required for visiting dzongs and temples.
