Tashigang, the largest district in Bhutan, is the bustling commercial hub of the east. A world away from the western valleys, it offers a raw, authentic glimpse into a less-visited part of the kingdom, characterized by steep slopes, vibrant cultures, and a strong sense of community.
What's the Place like?
Crossing the formidable Thrumshing La pass (3,750m) brings you into the distinct cultural landscape of Eastern Bhutan. The people here, the Sharchops, are considered the original inhabitants of Bhutan, and their traditions, dialects, and textiles are unique. Tashigang town clings to a steep hillside and buzzes with market activity. The region is known for its rugged beauty, intricate weaving, and as the gateway to the remote and sacred Merak and Sakteng valleys, home to the semi-nomadic Brokpa people.
Where to visit in Tashigang
- Tashigang Dzong: An impressive fortress built in the 17th century to defend against eastern invaders. Perched on a sharp spur overlooking the Dangme Chhu river, it is a masterpiece of military architecture and offers commanding views.
- Gom Kora: A spectacular temple set amidst rice fields and dramatic rock faces. It is famous for a rock that bears the imprint of Guru Rinpoche and is the site of a vibrant festival where people circumambulate the temple throughout the night.
- Radi (Rigsum Goenpa): A serene monastery located on a hilltop across the river from Tashigang Dzong. The short hike up is rewarded with peaceful surroundings and beautiful views of the valley.
- Merak and Sakteng Valleys: For the true adventurer. A multi-day trek (or a long drive) takes you to these remote valleys, where the Brokpa people live a unique semi-nomadic lifestyle, wearing distinctive yak-hair clothing and hats. (Note: Special permits are required).
- Khangma Village & Weaving: The eastern region is the heart of Bhutanese textile production. Visit villages like Khangma to see master weavers at work creating intricate patterns like kushuthara.

When to visit Tashigang
- Autumn (October – November): The ideal time. The monsoon has ended, the skies are clear, and the weather is pleasant for exploring the steep terrain.
- Spring (March – May): A good time to visit, with warm days and blooming rhododendrons in the hills.
- Summer (June – September): The monsoon season. Tashigang receives heavy rainfall, which can lead to landslides and make travel difficult.
- Winter (December – February): Days are cool and generally sunny, but nights can be cold. The high passes leading to the west can be closed temporarily due to snow.
